Woke Up the Gypsy in Me

Bill Soden

Last night for the first time I really felt that train pull out of town
I’d heard it leave a hundred times before
Headed for horizons where the sun lies down in flames each night
Leaving me stuck here forever, for sure

Woke up the gypsy in me, the gypsy
Woke up the gypsy in me
My time for flying free, free as the breeze
Woke up the gypsy in me

First thing this morning started packing things into my bag
I felt her standing right up close on me
She didn’t have a thing to say, stood there dumbstruck
While I tried explaining why I had to leave

She looked at me dead level, cold and hard as steel could be
Said I should be long past these crazy dreams
I hit the door for the spirit whispers of the open road
And all the music, songs that song birds sing
