What We Used to Be

Bill Soden

Saturday night, I’m out walking down town
Watch a couple young couples coming cross the street
Puppy love
Heaven above
Brings to mind what we used to be

Step into a club see a couple at a table
Coming on to each other full speed
Feeling the flush
Of that white hot rush
Reminds me of what we used to be

Pass a man and his wife walking hand in hand
She whispers something real sweet
They’re staying with it
Ain’t gonna quit it
Memories of what we used to be

Our love was picture perfect
Until it fell apart
Sometimes hurt hits full throttle
Another slug through my heart

Sit down at a café, see a couple through the window
Empty space, an eternity in between
Each on a cell phone
Might as well be all alone
A reminder of what we used to be

A midlife guy and a young one clinging desperate
In an affair it’s plain to see
Brings to mind
When we crossed the line
I’m alone thinking on what we used to be
I’m alone thinking on what we used to be
