On the Inside

Bill Soden

I knew you’d be over for the last of your things
I didn’t think that I’d care
I thought I was over you
But now you’re standing there
Looking so good all over, I reach for composure
Trying not to let you see
How one look at you, even now
Still tears the heart out of me

On the outside I walk tall
Real men don’t never crawl
They only fall on the inside
On the outside I’m all man,
No sign it’s my last stand
But oh Lord, on the inside

Some things from the closet, one of two lamps
And my only favorite chair
They disappear down the walk, I keep thinking
Once we were a perfect pair
Now that’s me in your rearview, dying to stay near you
But hiding the pain in my heart
I’m gonna wait til you turn the corner
To break down and fall apart

On the outside I walk tall
John Wayne would never crawl
But he’d surely fall on the inside
On the outside I’m all man
No sign it’s my last stand
But oh Lord, on the inside
