My Heart Speaks the Truth

Bill Soden

I wound up in this border town
En route to don’t know where
Hiding from reminders
On a wing and a prayer
Trying to believe I’m over you
What the hell’s the use
Barely keeping my head above water
My heart speaks the truth

Sitting in the old town square
Statues make no sound
Look straight ahead seeing nothing
Hell, I see you all around
Most nights I toss and turn
Lose sleep over you
Tell myself I’m doing better
But my heart speaks the truth

Folks round here are real nice
Don’t poke round bout my past
I don’t want to talk about it
They don’t need to ask
I could tell them something like
I never needed you
I’d be lying to myself
My heart speaks the truth
