Green Bayou

Bill Soden

Met her on Dauphine
Went south out of NOLA till we ran out of road
She took me by the hand and led me down the path
To green bayou, a place she called home

Unpainted shack, traps off the dock
Flat boat tied up beside
She led me inside smooth as molasses
Past bone and shell wind chimes

Spirits and voodoo
Down on green bayou
Spirits and voodoo
Down on green bayou

She read my cards must have read my mind
Could see me way down deep inside
Swear I saw a stuffed raven move
Felt the gleam in its eyes

Wasn’t sure what to do she made the first move
She kissed me, her black cat moaned
Wind blown curtains danced like ghosts on the walls
A magic garden she’d grown

She was coffee with cream, in and out of a dream
Couldn’t believe what I saw
All kind of critters, some gave me jitters
Skins skulls and furs on the walls

My motor was revving she was high octane
We knew each other head to toe
Morning she asked if I’d be leaving
She knew I had nowhere to go
