Great Divide

Bill Soden

Rose up so high before them
They were filled, with awe and wonder
Peaks crowned with ice and snow
That reached to heaven’s skies
Headed west across the country
No telling what they might find
The answer lay before them, across the great divide
The answer lay waiting, across the great divide

From the banks of the wide Missouri
‘Til the Rockies came in to sight
So often lost or hungry
Helped by tribesmen, they survived
Mapped the rivers, plains and forests
Saw places, holy as shrines
They kept on moving, toward the great divide
Always moving, toward the great divide

The new land opened arms to greet them
Seemed so endless in their eyes
Pacific water sprayed their faces
They’d never seen such stars at night
A bridge was made between two oceans
The country opened up so wide
They had made the journey, they crossed the great divide
They had crossed over, across the great divide
