Blue Mockingbird

Bill Soden

Crossed the state line in Northeast Georgia
To reach a rental cabin out of town
When we arrived at the top of the mountain
A total silence screamed out loud

We were hoping to relight the fire
That flame went out some time ago
Neither one of us had brought enough matches
To bring our embers to a glow

Then we heard the sad song of a blue mockingbird
Gave us an awful chill
Weren’t no way to turn back time
Never was and never will

We looked at each other, seeing nothing
Both of us had heard that sad bird sing
Going to take more than a weekend getaway
More than a change of scene

Got back in the van and headed for home
Still hearing the song we’d heard sung
A bell had tolled for us some time ago
That bell could never be unrung
