Back breaking work on my Nebraska homestead
All alone out on the great plains
Cut me a house of sod and wood
Silence lay heavy as a ball and chain
Ran a notice in a back east paper
Soon I got a reply
We wrote a bit, agreed to marry
I met the train when she arrived
Mail order bride, not much to look at
But neither was I
Wondered why she ever come out here
Never asked her why
A tiny seed was planted
Love arrived in due time
That tiny seed, grew and flourished
We came to abide
The land was hard, burning summers
Winters blowing so cold
She put her shoulder to the wheel
Strong as any man I’d ever known
We got some kids, she raised them right
She went deaf from the howling wind
No change in the love between us
No way we’d cash our chips in
